I AM a TRIATHLETE - Part 1 - Pre Race

[Since I have a lot to say, I'm going to break this into a could different entries.]

Who would have thought that I would ever be able to say that? The funny thing is...I loved the training, the camaraderie among the other trainees and the race itself. I think I'm hooked.

In summary, I'm glad I did it but like all things I wish certain parts were better.

My goal was to go all out on the swim and bike and try to hold it all together for the run. It was quite an ambitious plan.

The highlight was the swim. The low light was the run. The horrible weather was a close second. Details below.

PRE-RACE
After a relatively good night's sleep I headed down to the transition area at 4:00 am and set up my gear. Kudos for preparing a written checklist in advance so that I didn't stress the morning of wondering if I forgot anything.

I had a fantastic spot in the first position in my row and was very close to the bike/run out.

I hooked up with the other Snapple trainees and we all were bouncing around with nervous energy. We met Mayor Fenty who was racing that day and also met Dave Scott --- a real all-star in the sport of triathlon.

Of course I found myself wandering around and standing line for the port-a-potties more than anything else, but I guess it's better than trying to sit still.

Since my swim wave was later in the morning, I was able to see the Sprint distance athletes take off . It was a lot of fun to cheer on the other Snapple trainees. Go Snapple!
