On Sunday a group of us wrapped up our second afternoon of epic-ness riding, snacking and swimming out toward Haymarket Virginia. It was the same itinerary as our trip out earlier in the summer.
We met at a community park and headed out for a 24-30 mile bike ride through the rolling farmlands. I definitely felt better this time around --- a bit fitter and confident on the bike. I definitely remember struggling the last time we were out here.
Only drama of the day was when one of the riders dropped her chain and got it all jammed up in the cassette. I pulled over and we fought to get it free. Here's a picture of the grassy front yard that became our temporary workshop as we got her chain fixed.
After the ride, we relaxed in the park and gobbled down a much anticipated and deserved lunch. Can anyone say, "please pass the pasta salad?"
We then headed out to the quarry for an afternoon of open water swim practice. The water looked and felt fantastic after a morning on the bike.
I ended up doing two big laps around the course (1300 yards) and then three mini laps (630 yards).
It really is incredible how buoyant you are in the sausage suits. It really helps to keep your body in alignment on top of the water which makes for a smoother stroke. I still think it feels gross to wear them.
I spent a good portion of the swim focused on my stroke, practicing sighting and most importantly...staying calm and focused.
Overall, a hard training day as we head into taper.
