Ears, Nose & Throat

Today I visited Dr. S. --- a highly recommended Asthma and Allergy doctor in the area.

Let me say...he was fantastic. Aside from being very knowledgeable and having a great bedside manner he also was a former elite level cyclist. Bonus!

We started with the usual height, weight, temp and heart rate. We then did a pulmonary test that determines your lung function. I guess it's no surprise that I have very strong lung capacity. The doc was very impressed.

We also talked about my fun allergy to bees (buzz buzz) and my odd cold induced hives. The good news is that I got some new epi pens for the bees and apparently Dr. S. has a special interest in hives. Interesting. He works with a doc at NIH who is also studying hives. Looks like they want to study my blood during my next visit. Hey, whatever you're into I guess.

After a full work up and an armful of funky ink dots and blotchy skin, the diagnosis is:

•my annoying hacking cough is the result of post-nasal drip that has manifested itself into temporary asthma-like symptoms. Thankfully the 2-3 week treatment should fix me right up.

• I'm mildly allergic to more stuff than I thought. Aside from being highly allergic to bees, excessive cold and shrimp --- I'm also mildly allergic to some trees, grass and dust mites. Great.

Luckily, none of this or the drugs they're giving me should strongly impact my ability to keep training and participate in Nations. I just have to be mindful of being short of breath in the next few days.
