Racing Into The New Year...

It sounded like a fantastic idea when I found myself at the beach this weekend and noticed that the Seaside Striders (out of Rehoboth) were sponsoring a 5k. See .

I definitely had mixed feelings as I stood in line waiting for my bib. My running has been so sporadic over the last two months that I didn't look forward to the popping and pinging that I likely was in store for, but I was also excited to get out there again.

The race was nice and small (under 200 people) and the route rolled from the main drag to the beach and back.

As always, the first mile hurts. It takes a little time for me to get into a rhythm. I held steady and started to move forward in the pack. I decided not to obsess about my time and decided to just run.

For most of the race I paced with the local 70-80 year old running stud. I figured I couldn't let this guy blast past me. At mile two I passed him and started reeling in other runners. With a quarter mile left to go I had another runner in my sights. It was funny when a different runner told me to go for it b/c my prey looked to be weakening. That's all it took. I took off and sprinted past her to the finish. Too funny.

When I looked done at my watch I was shocked to have finished in 30:48 minutes. Throughout the race my body left clumsy and heavy. I thought for sure my time was going to be closer to 45 minutes as a result!

Who would have thunk! Happy New Year everyone!!!
